On March 27, the Friendship Public Charter School Chamberlain Robotix Starz competed at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Spring 2013 Middle School Engineering Competition. Two teams traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana. For most it was their first time on an airplane. All of the preparation, teamwork, and anxiety were worth the work.
Both presentations went well. Students spoke well and answered judges questions with authority. Scores were high where teamwork was emphasized. During the robot competition in the Sumo Ring, Cumanji and SumoSam performed just as the students had programmed them to do. How exciting it was to watch the opponents robot get pushed out of the ring…especially by a program our Computer Engineer designed for that purpose!
Students met fellow engineers from around the country at workshops and a College and Career Fair where the Starz already identified colleges they wish to attend. While visiting one college, a 5th grader was excited to learn that he could take more than one course of study while in college–that way he could explore all the options of what he wanted to become!
Although they did not make the top 3 awards, we discussed together how students scored well on their technical papers, presentations, and won their sumo contests. They are ready for the next challenge!
It was a great experience for our engineers! To add icing to the cake, the pilot that flew us into Washington, DC looked just like us!
